Start with the room, not the product name
A north-facing living room and a west-facing bedroom perform different jobs. Before comparing glass, note the size of the opening, its orientation, external shading, ventilation needs and how the room will be used.
Large windows can bring in valuable daylight and winter sun, but they also make whole-system performance more noticeable. A considered specification balances insulation, useful solar gain and protection from unwanted summer heat.
Read U-value and solar heat gain together
U-value describes how readily heat moves through the whole window; lower values generally indicate better insulation. Solar heat gain coefficient describes how much solar energy enters. Whether more or less is useful depends on orientation and shading.
Ask for whole-window values rather than glass-only figures. The frame, sash, seals and proportions can change the result, so compare like with like whenever possible.

- Record the insulated glass build-up and any coating.
- Compare performance at the quoted window size.
- Review major orientations separately instead of using one rule everywhere.
Treat installation as part of the system
A strong glass and frame specification cannot compensate for uncontrolled gaps, poor seals or unresolved flashing. The window needs to meet the wall, sill and internal lining in a deliberate way.
Before ordering, confirm who is responsible for perimeter sealing, flashing, reveals, trims, drainage and making good. That scope is part of the performance outcome, not a finishing detail.
